Tips to Ease a Long Distance Move

Downsizing and preparing for a move is much easier when you use these tips:

  • Start Downsizing Belongings Early: Once you have made up your mind to move, start sorting through your stuff right away. The last thing you want to do is get blindsided by a sudden sale of your home leaving you scrambling to pack and leave. It is a good idea to start as early as a month or two before you list your home on the market.
  • Establish an Action Plan: Determine which rooms you should tackle first. One suggestion is to work on the places that are at the “heart” of the home. The rooms where the family gathered most frequently, such as the kitchen, living room, or family room. These are the areas that not only tend to have the most clutter, but they also have the most memories. 
  • Put Stuff into Piles: As you work in a room, make four piles – keep, donate, give to family, and trash. You might even want a “sell” pile for some items. Remember, your new place may be much smaller, so it will help to see that the “keep” pile is among the smaller ones. You may even want to work with a diagram of your new home to help you determine what furniture you have room to take.
  • Keep Your Children in the Loop: While you may think your daughter would love the antique clock, she may prefer modern, contemporary décor for her home instead. Talk to your kids and ask them if there are items they want. If not, get rid of them by either donating or selling.
