Light therapy is a simple and effective treatment for older adults that suffer from circadian rhythm sleep disorders, or mood disorders. The area of the brain that controls the circadian rhythm also regulates body temperature, alertness, and regular hormone cycles. Sleep problems are especially common for seniors.
What does light therapy treat?
According to the Mayo Clinic, light therapy helps conditions such as:
- Sleep disorders
- Seasonal Affective Disorder
- Depression
- Dementia
- Jet lag
For seniors who suffer from sleep disorders caused by disrupted circadian rhythms, the hormone, melatonin, isn’t produced when it should be. Lack of melatonin may result in trouble sleeping or falling asleep at inappropriate times. Those who have Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia are more susceptible to having trouble sleeping at night. Light therapy helps reset the body’s clock to resolve most sleep issues.
Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that can occur due to lack of sunlight. Spending time in front of the lightbox mimics sunshine to increase overall mood and well-being.
How does it work?
Light therapy is as easy as pressing a button on a lightbox, then sitting in front of it with your eyes focused away from the source of light for about a half-hour, usually upon waking up. It is a safe treatment that can be done virtually anywhere with a power outlet nearby. Sitting in front of the lightbox will give off 10,000 lux, which is 100 times brighter than typical indoor lighting, and less invasive than sunshine at roughly 50,000 lux or more.
